When running outside you get to see nature and you get to take a breath of fresh air. Running outside gives you obstacles to run over and around which may make running for some less boring, especially as the scenery changes.

Running outside is a good way in relating to other runners, as you can run in groups who can help to motivate you. Running outside also gives you natural incline and decline options which can include steep climbs and descents.

Another thing about outdoor running is that you are using more muscles then you are using on a treadmill. Running outdoors requires you to push yourself forward rather than react to a treadmill belt moving towards you.

On the other hand, running on a treadmill can provide great cardiovascular exercise the same as running. On a treadmill, you can work out any time of day or night without any of the inconveniences of running outside.

Running on a treadmill inside helps you avoid the cold of winter, the rain, or the heat of the summer. Another advantage oftraining on a treadmill is that you do not have to carry your water or your iPod.

Everything can fit on the console of your treadmill while you are running. Some treadmills even have an internet hookup and video of running outdoors.

Also, when running on a treadmill you have a more polite running surface which can be backed by springs for less jarring running.  Nowadays these treadmills have inclining capabilities which can provide some extra workout for your legs.

Over all you have to make this decision based on your needs and your room for equipment. I think for a serious competitive runner, it is important you have both the option of running on a treadmill and running outside.
