Woodway Fitness equipment is not a name that everyone would recognize. If you are in the fitness or healthcare industry, most would know that Woodway is the “Rolls Royce” of the industry.

Woodway was developed in Weil am Rhein, Germany in 1974. The company began when a Technical Director was in charge of planning a fitness facility and found that treadmills were one of the most important pieces of equipment in a gym, but in his opinion most were not mechanically engineered to meet human needs. The Technical Director was Willi Schoenberger.

The name Woodway comes from the German word “Waldweg” or “way of the woods”. Schoenberger wanted his treadmills to feel like running on a soft pine needle covered path in the forest. He wanted to develop a treadmill that eliminated friction associated with traditional “conveyor treadmills”. He finally was able to develop a treadmill using rubber and ball bearings and was able to patent his revolutionary treadmill design.

In 1983, a manufacturing license was awarded to Sakai Medical, for the use of Woodway treadmills in the Japanese Marketplace.

In 1988, a U.S. License was granted to a small, yet well known and respected manufacturing company in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Woodway U.S.A. was completely formed in 1990, and now is the primary manufacturer for all Woodway treadmills in the US and overseas for the entire company. Woodway also features manufacturing facilities in Japan and Germany which makes Woodway the largest specialized treadmill manufacturing in the world.
