Treadmill Review

The Horizon Adventure is a decent treadmill but doesn’t have the same quality other treadmills in its price range offer. It does not feel sturdy under heavy footfall. The running belt is shorter than competitor treadmills by 5” and can make using the higher incline levels difficult since users feel like they may run out of track.

Overall, we do not recommend the Adventure 3 for potential treadmill buyers and recommend they look at competitor treadmills in the same price range, such as the SOLE F63 and NordicTrack C990.

Price

The Horizon Adventure 3 treadmill is regularly priced at $899.

The Adventure 3 Is Built For Users Who:

  • Will Only Be Walking - While the Adventure 3 can handle some jogging, it is best for users who want a treadmill only for walking.
  • Prefer A Simple Interface - The Adventure 3 has a simple interface with easy to scroll through programs.
  • Want A Light Weight Treadmill - Weighing under 120 lbs, the Adventure 3 is a very light treadmill. If space is an issue and you need a machine you can fold up and put away between uses, the Adventure 3 is a good choice.

Why The Adventure 3 Earned Only 2.5 Stars

While the Adventure 3 isn’t a terrible treadmill, the price is too high for the limited features offered.

  • Small running belt - The Adventure 3 measures 20” x 55”, which is 5” shorter in length than other treadmills in its price range, like the NordicTrack C990 and SOLE F63.
  • Limited utility - With its small motor, the Adventure 3 is best suited for walkers..
  • Not sturdy at high speeds - As a light machine under 120 lbs total, the Adventure 3 can feel flimsy at times. Users who walk heavily may find the deck bouncing more than they are comfortable with.

In the same price range, treadmill seekers can find a better machine for their home gym.

Main Specs - 5/10

Specs “Quick Review”:
  • Motor Size: 2.5 CHP
  • Running Area: 20” x 55”
  • Weight Capacity: 300 lbs
  • Folding: Yes
  • Footprint In Use (W,L,H): 34" x 71" x 54"
  • Footprint Folded (W,L,H):  34" x 45" x  61"
  • Incline Range: 0% - 12%
  • Max Speed: 12 MPH
  • Treadmill Best For: Walkers
  • Electrical Requirements: 113-120V

Motor Size - The motor in this treadmill is 2.5 CHP. This is a small motor compared to other treadmills on the market and in this price range. We recommend a larger motor size for regular running.

Running Area - The running surface is 20” by 55”. This is considerably shorter than similarly priced treadmills - approximately 5” shorter than most. Tall users might consider a longer running surface for more stability. However, smaller running gates shouldn’t have problems with this sized running surface.

Weight Capacity - The Adventure 3 has a weight capacity of 300 lbs. Our heaviest testers (approx. 220 lbs) found this treadmill less stable than others when running and prefer sturdier treadmills for ease of mind.

Folding  - The Adventure 3 does have the ability to fold up compactly. It’s a small treadmill that stores well in a closet if you’re looking for something you can hide away while not in use.

Space / Footprint -  Like many Horizon treadmills, the Adventure 3 is a fairly compact machine. When in use, it measures 34" wide, 71" long, and 54" high. It is a lightweight machine as far as treadmills go, weighing only 177 lbs. In its folded state of 34" wide, 45" long, and 61" high, it is easy to move and can fit easily into tight living quarters.

Max Speed - The treadmills max speed is 12 MPH. This is an industry standard. However, we don’t suggest using this treadmill at high speeds.

Incline - This treadmill has an incline range of 0% to 12% incline. Similarly priced, the Sole F63 has a max incline of 15%.

Features “Quick Review”
  • Display: 5.75” yellow-green LCD
  • PreInstalled Workout Apps: 30
  • Speakers: Yes
  • Fans: No
  • Heart Rate Monitoring: Handlebar grip
  • USB port: No
  • Audio Jack: Yes
  • Water bottle cubbies: 2
  • Device holder: Same as cubbies

Workout Apps - The Adventure 3 comes with 30 different workout programs. These programs focus on a range of activities, from calorie-based goals, distance programs, interval training, manual programming, and step-based workouts.

Display - The display on the Adventure 3 is a simple, 5.75” LCD screen. The display will show you a running track of your progress, time elapsed, calorie burn, and heart rate.

Speakers - Sound quality is decent up to mid-range volume. The treadmill’s sound quality rapidly deteriorates at higher volumes, with feedback noise present at the highest volume levels.

Fans - No fans come with the Adventure 3.

Heart Rate Monitoring - The only heart rate monitoring equipment that comes with the Adventure 3 is the handlebar EKG grips. As heart rate monitoring handlebars are not very accurate, this can be a downside for users who want an accurate measurement of their workout intensity.

Other Tech Features
  • ViaFit Connect - The ViaFit Connect app is Horizon’s app for its treadmills. Track your workouts and share them if you want. There isn’t much utility offered with this app. You can track workouts and export them to other fitness tracking apps but not much else.
  • Holders - There are two water/device holders located on either side of the console.
  • Audio jack - There is an audio jack located on the console so you can plug in your MP3 player and utilize the console speakers.

Adventure 3 Review: Build Quality

  • Warranties - Lifetime for frame and motor, 3 years cushioning and parts, 1 year for labor.
  • Belt - 2-ply
  • Roller Size - Front 2.25” and rear 1.75”
  • Cushioning - 3-zone Variable Response Cushioning
  • Customer Support - The customer support number hours are M-Th 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. CST, F 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. CST, with no hours on the weekends. The email support hours are unlisted, but you can contact Horizon through email.
  • Return Policy - 30-day satisfaction guarantee, will charge for shipping return and original assembly fee

While the build quality of the Adventure 3 isn’t necessarily bad, it does not hold up well against other treadmills in its price range. It is a lighter treadmill and prone to being bouncy when using it for anything but walking.

The cushioning of the Adventure 3 is minimal. Our testers did not notice a difference between the 3 different zones of cushioning despite the 3-zone Variable Response cushioning. This likely won’t trouble an average user with no special cushioning requirements. But for those worried about joint health or recovering from injuries, you may want a more heavily cushioned treadmill than the Adventure 3.

Bottom Line Review Of The Horizon Adventure 3

The Adventure 3 doesn’t stack up well against other treadmills in its price range. Direct competitor brands like the SOLE F63 offer higher weight capacity and an overall sturdier treadmill. The treadmill from NordicTrack, the C990, has better features, a longer running belt, and more choices when it comes to a runner’s comfort.

So overall, we don’t recommend the Adventure 3. There are other simple interface treadmills in the same price range with better features and a sturdier built.
