Treadmill Review

Last Updated: 1/11/2022

Note: This review contains images and video using the 2017 model. The 2019 S77 model maintains the same specs. The difference between the two models is the organization of the console. However, the programs, motor, and other integral components of the S77 are all the same as the 2017 model. The only functional difference between these two versions of the S77 is the added USB port to the 2019 model.

The Sole S77 is a simple, well built treadmill that is suitable for users who enjoy minimal options for tech and entertainment features. With a large motor and strong, supportive frame, runners can use this treadmill for extended periods without fear of the components breaking down.

Price

The SOLE S77 is normally priced at $1,899.

The S77 Is Built For Users who:

  • Want a strong treadmill - The S77 can hold a user who weighs up to 400 lbs. Not many treadmills can support that weight and most weight-friendly treadmills come from the SOLE line.
  • Prefer simple consoles - With a 10.1” LCD, the S77 has a simple interface for users who don’t care for touchscreens with the latest fitness tech.
  • Have dedicated space - The S77 is a heavy machine, weighing 258 lbs. Users need to have a set space for this treadmill as it does not fold and is hard to move.

Why The S77 Earned 4 Stars

The S77 is a quality treadmill from SOLE Fitness’ treadmill lineup. Its downsides only appear when compared to competitor treadmills.
  • Motor - The S77 is equipped with a 4.0 CHP motor. It is slightly smaller than the X11i motor (4.25 CHP), but overall is a good motor which works well for walkers and runners alike.
  • Incline range - Able to incline from 0% to 15%, the S77 can perform the basic incline abilities expected in a treadmill which costs over $1,500. However, the similarly priced X11i can decline to -6% and reach an incline of 40%.
  • Entertainment - There are 10 programs which come with the S77. Both the Elite T9 and X11i have 44 workout programs. They also have HD touchscreens. This may not be a problem for users with simple needs, but it can be a detractor for users looking for a more versatile treadmill experience.

While the S77 is a good treadmill and a decent option depending on your needs, there are other treadmills in its price range which outclass it.

Main Specs - 8/10

Specs “Quick Review”:
  • Motor Size: 4.0 CHP
  • Running Area: 22” x 60”
  • Weight Capacity: 400 lbs
  • Folding: No
  • Footprint In Use (W, L, H): 36” x 82” x 58”

  • Incline Range: 0% - 15%
  • Max Speed: 12 MPH
  • Treadmill Best For: Walkers, Joggers, Runners
  • Electrical Requirements: 113-120V

Motor Size - The motor in this treadmill is 4.0 CHP. With this large motor, it is up to daily use by multiple users with a variety of workout needs. It is significantly larger than the Elite T9 but the S77 motor is 0.25 smaller than the X11i.

Running Area - The running surface is a spacious 22”x 60”, which is a bit wider than the Elite T9.

Weight Capacity - The S77 has a weight capacity of 400 lbs. SOLE treadmills are well-known for being made of heavy and durable materials, which are perfect for heavier users.

Space / Footprint - The S77 measures 36” wide, 82” long, and 58” tall. As it does not fold up, the S77 will need a dedicated space in your home. It is also heavy, weighing 258 lbs, which makes the treadmill difficult to move.

Max Speed - The treadmills max speed is 12 MPH. This is the industry standard for most treadmills over $1,000. Thanks to the console’s quick select speed buttons, you can easily go from the treadmill’s top speed down to a more reasonable pace. The X11i also has an easy interface. The Elite T9 does not have a good console interface, and we recommend you read our review of the Elite T9 to learn more about it.

Incline - This treadmill has an incline range of 0% to 15%. While this is a standard range for most treadmills, the S77 is outdone by the similarly priced X11i. If you want more incline capability, consider the X11i.

Display - The display on the S77 is a 10.1” TFT LCD. There is backlighting to illuminate the screen’s dark color scheme but not enough to been harsh. The display will show user information like speed, heart rate, pace, calories burned, etc. The image below is the updated console for the 2019 S77 Model.

Speakers - There are two speakers on the S77. They are located on either side of the console, above the water bottle cubbies. The sound quality is decent but not crisp with little bass. Speaker quality deteriorates noticeably at the highest volume levels.

Fans - The S77 has a fan mounted at the top of the treadmill console. The fan can be adjusted up or down. However, the fan is single-speed and doesn’t generate much of a breeze.

Heart Rate Monitoring - While the S77 has EKG handlebar grips for heart rate monitoring, handlebar grips are not accurate. The S77 does come with a complimentary heart rate monitoring chest strap when you purchase the treadmill which they boast 99.9% accuracy. We advise users not to bother with the handlebar readings and to just go off of the chest strap data.

Other Tech Features

  • SOLE Fitness App - The S77 is compatible with the SOLE Fitness app. The app allows for a more direct control of the treadmill and stores user profiles. Several of our testers found that using the app made using the compatible treadmills more enjoyable.
  • Handrail controls - There are speed and incline buttons on each of the arms of the treadmill. This shortens the available space to hold onto the treadmill but is a convenient way to adjust speed or incline quickly.
  • Holders - SOLE treadmill have plenty of holders and the S77 is no exception. It has 2 water bottle holders on either side of the treadmill console, and there is a device holder located below the console for further storage.

S77 Review: Build Quality
  • Warranties - Lifetime on frame, motor, and deck; 5 years on electronics; 2 years labor.
  • Belt - 2-ply
  • Roller Size - 2.75” front and back
  • Cushioning - Cushion Whisper Flex™ Deck
  • Customer Support - Phone support is limited to Monday-Friday, no weekends. Email sales support is 24/7.
  • Return Policy - SOLE Fitness offers a 30-day trial with a money back guarantee. The customer will have to pay an 8% stocking fee when returning products

With a heavy-duty frame, the S77 is a sturdy treadmill. It has full metal side rails, which some of the other SOLE treadmills lack. While these metal rails add to the overall weight, they also add to the overall sturdiness.

The Cushion Whisper Flex™ Deck is adequate for users who don’t have special cushioning needs. Some of our testers prefer the more pavement-like feel to the treadmill deck, while other testers need more cushioning as they are recovering from injuries. If you need a more cushioned machine, consider the X11i’s superior cushioning.

Bottom Line Review Of The SOLE S77

While we liked the SOLE S77, it is outdone by the X11i in several categories. However, there are areas where the S77 is the best. So if you are looking for these qualities in a treadmill:

  • Holds up to 400 lbs
  • Simple display
  • Wide running area

Then the S77 is a good option for you to consider when looking for your next treadmill.
